Denture Stabilisation
Loose dentures can have a real negative impact on ones life.
You can find you miss out on simple pleasures, miss eating your favourite foods, be afraid to laugh, smile and even speak in public.
It can be a real frustrating experience with the feeling of nowhere to turn.
Due to the development of Dental Implants there are now alternatives and solutions available in which loose and unstable dentures can be a thing of the past.
The important thing to understand, is now you have a choice, and that there are several treatment options available. As with any treatment , there is always the choice to do nothing and continue with your existing prosthesis.
Some treatment options can include-
1/ Continue with existing prosthesis or have them relined or remade. This will give minimum benefit, but at the least cost.
2/ Full arch Bridge fixed restoration replaces the need for removable dentures.
A full set of teeth can be fixed to implants to create a stable and aesthetic result with maximum comfort.
3/ Implant fixed over denture is exactly as a normal full or part denture but it is stabilised with attachments to 2 or 4 implants. Special ‘O ring’ type attachments are retrofitted to an existing denture( if the existing denture is sound) to allow the denture to attach and stabilise on the implants. This can also be done with specialised
titanium bars and precision fixtures.. The denture is still removable but when in the mouth, is stable. The main advantage with this option is a relatively stable denture at a reduced cost compared to a fixed bridge while maintaining easy to clean attachments.
4/ Implant fixed over denture ( lower jaw) ( Mini -Implants) are very similar to option 3 but use smaller diameter implants. They are one piece and are designed to be permanent.
The implants have a ‘ball’ which projects up from the gum. The ‘o ring socket’ connector is retrofitted to the denture, so as when the ‘ball and socket’ meet the denture sits firmly in place.
The main advantage mini implants have, is that they are far less invasive and are less expensive than conventional implants. They require less bone and don’t require extensive surgery as compared to conventional implants. The simple procedure can achieve denture stabilisation in 90 minutes.
Whyalla Dental Care offers this option to stabilise a full lower denture only. We don’t recommend this option for the upper jaw. ( due to success rates.)
ABOVE- Full arch bridge fixed restoration attaches to implants and is NOT removable. A very comfortable option.
ABOVE- Implant fixed over denture can be done for the upper and lower jaws. Usually with the upper jaw a special titanium bar is used but on the lower jaw the denture can be stabilised with 2 simple connectors on the denture which meet and connect with the implants to create a stable removable denture.
LEFT- Implant fixed over denture using mini implants. Whyalla Dental care only recommends this to be done on the lower jaw. 4 small diameter implants help stabilise a full lower denture with reduced expense and less complicated surgery.
