Is a Cracked Tooth a Dental Emergency?

A chipped, fractured, or cracked tooth can be a dental emergency, especially when it’s broken below the gum line or if gum tissue covers it. Neglecting a cracked or broken tooth can result in decay and bacterial infections, leading to pain and discomfort. Emergency dental care may be necessary to address the issue, remove any infection, and prevent further complications.

Timely intervention is crucial to ensure the best possible outcome and relieve any pain or discomfort associated with the broken tooth, so make sure to contact Whyalla Dental Care right away.

Going through a stressful or anxious period can lead to broken teeth through habitual grinding and clenching.

Common Causes of Broken Teeth

Dentists can easily spot the symptoms of a cracked tooth, even though you may not be able to see them. Whyalla Dental Care offers excellent treatments for broken teeth to restore your smile.

  • Most people aren’t aware they’re doing it, but subconsciously grinding or clenching can weaken teeth over time, making them prone to cracks or breaks. Teeth grinding or Bruxism is a more common habit than you might think, that can result in a broken tooth or several broken teeth if not picked up, particularly if you have been avoiding or missing dental appointments. Going through a stressful or anxious period can also create similar damage and wear to your teeth through repetitive grinding actions, which will require broken tooth treatment.

  • Accidents, falls, or sports-related injuries can result in sudden damage to your teeth.

  • Chewing hard substances like ice, nuts, or candy can cause teeth to chip or break. Teeth may seem tough and sturdy since they’re covered in tooth enamel, but they aren’t designed to crunch very hard things such as ice. Chewing ice seems like a harmless thing to do, and many people do it. But it can easily lead to tiny cracks and chipped or broken teeth. Cracking ice with your teeth can cause damage that may require an emergency dental visit for broken tooth repair.

  • Untreated cavities can erode the tooth structure, making it more likely to fracture.

Treatment Options for Broken Teeth

If you have a chipped or broken tooth, several dental treatments are available at our dental clinic to repair it. The treatment required and cost will depend on the size and location of the chip, as well as your individual needs and preferences for maintaining optimal oral health.

  • Dental sealants on the back molars and premolars may protect your teeth from becoming infected or cracked and act as a barrier against bacteria.

  • A simple filling may suffice for small chips or breaks as a cracked tooth treatment.

  • A dental crown may be needed to repair larger cracks and fractures that affect the tooth’s biting surface. Dental crowns are custom-made caps that fit over the broken tooth, restoring its size, strength, and structure.

  • We understand cosmetic concerns as well as functional ones. If the broken tooth is visible when you smile, a tooth-coloured resin can be bonded to the affected tooth and coloured to match the surrounding teeth.

  • A root canal and dental implant may be necessary to repair the tooth’s function and appearance, especially if poor oral hygiene has contributed to the problem.

  • In some cases, a tooth cannot be fixed, and removal may be required. See our Missing Teeth section for more information.
